Your domain is charged once when you register it. Renewals are charged at the current price for the extension at renewal time. Registry wholesale prices do change occasionally, in both directions, and we pass the current rate through rather than playing teaser-rate games on top.
While auto-renew is on
- About a week before anything is charged, we email you the exact renewal amount. No action is needed. It is a reminder that you can turn auto-renew off if you do not want the domain kept.
- Around 30 days before expiry, we charge the card on your account and renew the domain for another year. It appears on your statement as "Domain renewal" with the domain name.
- The domain's page shows the new expiry date once the registry confirms.
If the charge fails
An expired card is the usual reason. We email you and retry a few more times as expiry approaches. Fixing your card fixes the renewal: as soon as a new card is saved we try again automatically, and the domain's page has a Renew now button while a renewal is outstanding. See Renewal payment failed.
If nothing clears in time we send a final notice and the domain expires at the registry. Even then, contact us immediately: recovery is often still possible for a short window, though some registries charge a redemption fee. See When a domain expires.
Renewing early
Renew now on the domain's page charges the current price straight away and adds a year to the registration. Use it if you would rather settle the renewal before a trip, or lock in the current rate ahead of a price change.
Turning auto-renew off
Use the Auto-renew switch on the domain's page. With it off we will not charge you, and the domain expires at the end of its term. Turn it back on any time before then.
Domains with no card on file
If a domain reached your account without a card, for example a domain moved from a previous provider, we email you to add one at Billing as the renewal approaches. Saving a card anywhere in your account renews every domain that was waiting on it.
